Overview:

“Upper Mustang Trekking – A journey to forbidden kingdom of Nepal”

Upper Mustang Trekking is a journey to forbidden kingdom of Nepal. Trekkers must take the immigration permit, restricted area permit and ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project) permit for the trekking. Every year only handful of people are allowed to do trekking. Therefore, it is very special trekking to do in Nepal.

Trekking in Upper Mustang area was opened officially in 1992. Nepal Government allows only limited number of trekkers into the area. This is to protect the fragile environment and rich Tibetan tradition of the area.

Highlights

There are numerous things to see and activities to do during Upper Mustang Trekking. Here are few reasons why you should do Upper Mustang Trekking.

  • Village Beyond Mountains – Regular mountain vistas are seen on the northern direction. However, mountains are seen even in southern direction from Upper Mustang. Therefore, the village is often known as place beyond mountains.

  • Forbidden Kingdom – Nepal is federal country after abolishment of monarchial system. Upper Mustang though still practices the monarchial system locally. There is a king and queen and they have great significance in the culture of Upper Mustang People.

After the country turned into the federal state the last king Jigme Palbar Bista continued the tradition locally. When king Jigme died in 2016 there is no king in the area but people still believe in continuing the tradition culturally at least.

  • Monasteries – People follow Bonpo and Tibetan Buddhism in the area. There are numerous huge monasteries. These monasteries symbolizes the rich architectural skill of locals. There are more than half a dozen monasteries on the trail.
  • Himalayan Desert – It is highland excursion. Vegetation is scarce. Landscape is barren and rugged. Lower Mustang is full of green lush forests whereas Upper Mustang is less fertile and barren.
  • Kaligandaki Gorge – According to some geographical research and reports, the Kaligandaki Gorge is the deepest gorge of the world. It separates the Dhaulagiri Mountain range and Annapurna mountain range.
  • Lomanthang & Tiji Festival – Upper Mustang was called the kingdom of Lo earlier. According to local dialect Lomanthang means the walled city. The place is very vibrant and rich as it is on the border of Trans Himalayan trade between Himalayas and Tibet in ancient time.

The festival of Tiji is also very popular. Every year lots of people from across the globe attend this three day festival which is the major festival of area.

Book the Upper Mustang Trekking package. Witness the untainted Tibetan culture of the forbidden valley beyond mountains.

I want to go on a trek. What is the best time and place for it?

Everything you want to do is time and cost specific. Besides, your experience in trekking will also matter. There is wide range of options in Nepal if you want to explore. If you arrive in proper season, that is, between September to November (Autumn Season) and March to May (Spring Season), you might just experience something that you will be able to cherish for the lifetime. The shortest of trek can be Ghorepani Poon Hill trek, Langtang Helambu Trek or the Annapurna Circuit. The Everest trek and the full Annapurna sanctuary Trek can be ideal if you have a little more time. Finally, if you are looking for something that’s longer and more challenging, you’re looking at Kanchanjunga or Makalu area Trek.

What are the best trekking routes?

Annapurna Circuit, Annapurna Basecamp, Everest Basecamp, Dhaulagiri Circuit, Manaslu Circuit and Kanchanjunga are the most popular trekking routes in Nepal.

Should I trek with an agency or should I trek alone?

Trekking alone can be a good experience if you are familiar with the terrain and have quite a few experiences in the area. Nobody can drag you down, and you can move at your own pace savoring the pleasant sceneries around to you. However, if it is your first experience or so, you might want to travel in group or with an agency. Should situations like medical emergencies, isolation due to disasters, etc. occur, having a group can be a matter of relief. If you have no group and you’re all by yourselves, you can hire a porter or a guide.

Is communication to our home country possible while on a trek or climb?

Nepal’s communication facilities are getting day by day, and most portions of trekking routes have mobile phone coverage. In case of a climb, VHF or satellite phones are available at the base camp. In both cases, weather can play an important role in communication.
